The 33-year-old was kidnapped as she was walking home to the Brixton Hill area from a friend’s house near Clapham Common.
She was stopped by off-duty Metropolitan Police constable Wayne Couzens, who identified himself as a police officer, handcuffed her, and placed her in his car before transporting her to Kent.
Couzens subsequently raped and strangled Everard, before disposing of her body.
He was later handed a whole life tariff for her murder.
London Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan has issued this statement.
On the fourth anniversary of the murder of Sarah Everard, my thoughts are with her family, loved ones and all those impacted by her death, on what must be an unimaginably difficult day.
Sarah’s murder by a serving police officer horrified the entire country and significantly damaged the trust and confidence women and girls have in the police.
As Mayor, I am determined to work closely with the leadership at the Met to fix this and build on the work underway to ensure we get the change and reform needed to build a safer London for all.
