Mat Shaw is due to meet with representatives from the Government’s New Hospital Programme.

He says recent problems at the sites include the closure of 13 beds in a unit caring for frail and elderly patients and repeated lift failures.

The Trust has spent £60 million in recent years maintaining its ageing buildings, but Mr Shaw says significant challenges remain.

In May, the Care Quality Commission described the trust’s estates as a “significant risk” due to the age and condition of some areas.

A previous inspection in 2024 also highlighted crumbling facilities.

The Labour government has postponed plans for a new Specialist Emergency Care Unit next to St Helier Hospital until 2033.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to provide £500m for a new hospital in Sutton back in 2019.
