Lib Dem Sarah Olney says there needs to be “a genuine strategic overview of works in the borough.”
The MP for Richmond Parks says this will prevent scheduled repairs or upgrades taking place at the same time as urgent works.
A mixture of works are taking place at the moment with drivers and commuters reporting “major congestion.”
Areas around the town centre that are impacted include Kingston Hill, Park Road, Queen Elizabeth Road and Coombe Road.
Other routes in the borough are also shut including Burlington Road, which closed this morning with no access to Shannon Corner.
………………
Urgent Road Closure – Queen Elizabeth Road: At the junction with Birkenhead Avenue. Due to the discovery of a large void in the carriageway, it has been necessary to close the road with immediate effect. The void will be investigated and repairs carried out.
From Kingston Council; “the site will be reassessed today to check the progress of the cement curing. Once we are happy with the condition of the concrete the Tarmac will then be re-laid, once this has cooled the road marking can be reapplied.
There will be times when there appears to be little or no activity onsite. This could be for a number of reasons like:
Concrete curing – As this is a heavy duty carriageway and such a large area has been excavated, a lot of concrete is required before the road surface can be reapplied. The concrete is quite thick and needs sufficient time to cure so as to ensure these repairs are lasting.
Tarmac setting – When the road surface (tarmac) is relayed, it will be applied hot. Once compacted, it will also need time to cool and set before the surface is suitable for traffic, and road markings reapplied.”
Park Road, Kingston: 24 hour road closure of Park Road to through traffic at its junctions with Glenville and Borough Roads.
Access will be maintained to all the side roads in Park Road as works are undertaken to investigate and resolve a void in the carriageway.
The road is due to reopen today, but Kingston Council says, “at present we cannot advise on a time but we are confident the road will be fully open to two way traffic by Tuesday morning 20 August.”
