The event will form part of nationwide commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Normandy landings are recognised as the largest naval, land and air operation in history.

The public is being invited to Epsom Downs Racecourse for 7pm.

The beacon will be lit at 9.15pm following a short ceremony featuring a lone piper.

The beacon at Epsom Downs is one of a chain being lit across the country as well as Normandy on the coast of France.

It’s designed to represent the light and peace that emerged out of the darkness of war.
