The blaze on Mount Pleasant Road on Saturday night was caused by a “catastrophic failure” of a lithium-ion e-bike battery pack.
The family, who have twin girls who are also in need of clothes, lived next door to the property that was gutted.
It’s the second time the same house has gone up in flames in a year with last year’s blaze being blamed on a solar panel fault.
Statement from Kingston Council.
In the evening of 22 August/early hours of 23 August 2026, the London Fire Brigade attended a house fire on Mount Pleasant Road in New Malden.
No injuries were reported, however the property sustained significant damage and two direct neighbouring properties were also damaged. Residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated during the incident, with the majority able to return home safely later that night.
Short-term emergency accommodation has been arranged for those directly impacted, and council officers are providing ongoing support to affected households.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
