Drivers will get new rights to challenge unfair private parking charges, under new government rules.

Motorists in England, Wales and Scotland will have five minutes to decide whether to park, and ten minutes to leave once their session ends.

Charges for honest mistakes, like entering the wrong number plate, will be capped at £20 on appeal.

Nearly 17 million parking tickets were issued by private businesses in the last year.

Firms that fail to comply risk losing access to government data used to send penalty notices.
