Elmbridge Borough Council has unanimously agreed to exempt terminally ill residents from paying council tax.

The move follows similar policies in Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol, backed by Marie Curie’s Cost of Dying campaign.

The charity says end-of-life households face rising costs, with around 280 people in the UK dying in poverty each day.

Councillors say the policy is designed to ease financial pressure so families can focus on care, not bills.
