Mole Valley, Spelthorne and Runnymede are among the councils where residents have been taken to court over unpaid council tax.

The union says at least 146,000 people were taken to court across the region in 2024/25, with hundreds of thousands more in arrears or debt proceedings.

GMB says the system is “broken” and is calling for reform, warning councils are chasing residents through the courts to balance budgets.
