Full statement from the IOPC.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an independent investigation into the involvement of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) prior to a fatal road traffic collision on the A3 near Putney Common this morning.

We were notified by the MPS shortly after the collision and IOPC investigators attended the scene and the police post incident procedure to begin gathering information.

We understand that a Range Rover failed to stop for police and a pursuit began at around 12.30am before the Range Rover was involved in a collision with a motorbike and then overturned.

The motorbike rider was sadly declared dead at the scene. The occupant of the car was not seriously injured.

We declared an independent investigation at 5.49am.

Our thoughts are with the family of the rider who died and all those who have been affected by this incident.

The investigation is at an early stage.
