The Grade II listed crossing closed to motor vehicles in February for £8.5m of repairs when a crack was found in a cast iron component.
It then closed briefly to pedestrians and cyclists as well.
The council says the prop will help reduce the risk of future closures for those two groups.
The bridge remains closed to motor traffic while the situation is monitored.
