The new owner of WH Smith’s high street business is trying to buy some of the Poundland stores which number around 800 in the UK.

Poundland’s Clapham Junction store closed last Friday after only three years of trading.

Modella is reportedly among a handful of investors through to the second stage of an auction for the struggling discounter.

The company already owns Hobbycraft and The Original Factory Shop.
