The leaders of six London councils have told the Government new rules on single sex spaces feel like an attack on the trans community.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has published an updated code following a Supreme Court judgment last year.

It rules that “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refers to sex assigned at birth.

It says trans people should use either gender-neutral facilities or the ones that match their biological sex.

But leaders at councils including Lambeth are demanding the government clarifies the code.

They say it must not be used to exclude trans people from spaces like loos and changing rooms.

Lambeth Council signalled last month that it would resist the new guidance.
