That’s despite the Liberal Democrats winning every seat on the authority at the Local Elections in May.

PR is an electoral system in which the distribution of seats corresponds closely with the proportion of the total votes cast for each party.

For example, if a party gained 40% of the total votes, a perfectly proportional system would allow them to gain 40% of the seats.

Richmond’s Lib Dem council leader, Gareth Roberts, says:

“We are grateful in Richmond that so many residents voted for us.

“But we are also conscious that many voted for other parties and that some may feel their votes are not fully reflected in the results.

“That cannot be right. A healthy democracy depends on people feeling that their voice matters and that their vote makes a difference.

Cllr Roberts has written to the incoming Prime Minister asking him to back the authority’s campaign for PR.
