It’s after some residents living in Elm Road have complained about the barriers being down for up to 15 minutes at a time.
They say this causes the traffic to build along the narrow roads, affecting pollution levels around a nearby school, despite drivers being asked not to idle their engines.
They also say that the huge queues that build up affect drivers being able to access the main Kingston Road because a yellow box at the junction with Elm Road makes drivers very “hesitant” to move onto the road for fear of getting caught in it.
Network Rail says the signaller will always endeavour to pass as many pedestrians and cars as possible.
But this sometimes means keeping everyone out of the crossings until all approaching trains are clear.
