Love letters written to French sailors which were confiscated almost three hundred years ago have been opened for the first time.

The notes, bound together with white ribbon, were meant for crew on board the warship the Galatee in around 1757.

But it was captured by the British and when the French postal service forwarded the messages they ended up in storage at The National Archives in Kew until now.
