Epsom and Ewell Borough Council spent over £1.6 million on “nightly accommodation” last year.
This is where people in need of urgent housing are placed outside of the borough on a night-to-night basis.
The council says it’s because there is a waiting list of more than 3 years for temporary accommodation in Epsom and Ewell.
160 homeless households are in temporary accommodation and 90 are in nightly paid accommodation outside of the borough at the moment.
