Kingston Road shut unexpectedly near the library yesterday, with the utilities company requesting an 8-day closure for emergency works.

Drivers have already been voicing their concern about cycle works a bit further up the road and due to be in place on and off until January.

They say the combination of roadworks, alongside the box junction at the end of Elm Road and a level crossing also in Elm Road are causing gridlock, especially during school times.

Kingston Council has recently introduced a “Lane Rental Scheme.”

This sees utilities companies charged a daily rent for carrying out works, and for Kingston Road, can be around £2,000 per day.

Councillors say alongside the Lane Rental Scheme, they will challenge the duration of the closure.
