Could the menstrual cycle be a contributing factor in Anterior Cruciate Ligament injuries in women’s football?

A new study launching at Kingston University in June is to look at just that.

Rebekah Scamp reports.

ACL injuries in women’s football are becoming more common with players like Beth Mead and Sam Kerr suffering from them.

The year-long FIFA funded study will analyse hormone concentrations in blood samples.

The samples will be collected from both elite and grassroot women’s footballers from clubs including Chelsea and Fulham.

Oestrogen and progesterone in blood have been linked to increasing ligament laxity and a decrease in neuromuscular reaction times.
