Around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a takeaway restaurant in Thornton Heath in the early hours of this morning.

The shop on Brigstock Road was destroyed, but five people escaped before crews arrived and no injuries have been reported.

The brigade was called just before 1:30am and brought the fire under control just over an hour later.

The fire is being treated as accidental and is thought to have been caused by a commercial fryer.
