A number of fruit and veg stalls went up in flames just after 4am.
There were no reports of any injuries and the Met Police is investigating the cause of the blaze.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze and the fire also affected the fascia of a range of properties and a small part of the roof of a neighbouring property.
Eight people were evacuated from the area by the Metropolitan Police Service.
A plan to refurbish the marketplace by operator Between the Bridges was submitted to Kingston Council earlier this year and is in the process of being considered.
Statement from Kingston Council.
London Fire Brigade attended a fire at Kingston Market Place in the early hours of Tuesday 6 October. There were no injuries but the fire damaged several market stalls and businesses.
Due to the incident, the Market Place is currently cordoned off. Businesses within the closed-off area will not be trading until further notice while a London Fire Brigade and Met Police investigation is underway.
The council is monitoring the situation. Once we have more information we will share a further update.
Meanwhile, historic All Saint’s Church, which is based in the marketplace, says “We are shocked and saddened by the news of the fire in the marketplace overnight. We are deeply thankful for the tireless, brave efforts of our local firefighters and police officers, whose hard work kept the flames from fully taking hold of surrounding buildings, preventing an even greater disaster.
“We pray for safety over everyone involved, and for peace and provision for all those whose homes and businesses have been impacted, especially the market traders who have lost their stalls.”
