66-year -old William Ward from Epsom admitted throwing the pieces during a match on the 5th of July but denied the criminal charge.
Mr Ward challenged prosecutors at Westminster Magistrates Court to prove his intention and whether his actions disrupted the match.
The retired civil engineer was later charged with aggravated trespass and is due to stand trial in November.
