Wildlife Aid Foundation has attended two incidents of owls becoming entangled in barbed wire in the last week.

The latest involved a tawny owl which had completely torn its right wing to pieces in its struggle to break free.

The wire was so entwined across the owl’s back and wings that the only option was to cut it, either side of the owl.

The bird was taken to the charity’s hospital and sedated but the decision was taken to put it to sleep as the injuries were irreparable.

The charity, which has been operating for over 40 years, says dealing with such horrific and devastating injuries has never got any easier.

But it says the fact they were avoidable is truly hard to take.
