Air traffic control operator Nats says an outage last week which affected hundreds of thousands of passengers was caused by a ‘software defect’.

Its chief executive says a permanent fix is being tested and deployed.

Transport ​secretary Heidi Alexander’s called the disruption ‘completely unacceptable’ and says we need to ‘urgently understand’ why the issue wasn’t discovered before it caused chaos.
