Kingston Council has apologised after an equality assessment for its e-bike scheme said electric bikes could help women meet “traditional domestic responsibilities” and stay looking “nice” while cycling.

The wording sparked criticism online after appearing in a report linked to plans for 500 e-bikes across the borough.

The council says the passage came from an academic paper, was included in error, and has now been removed.

An investigation has been carried out and the authority says it’s reviewing its processes.
