Strawberry Hill House is hoping to acquire the painting “South East View of Strawberry Hill House” by Johann Heinrich Müntz.

The artwork, created between 1755 and 1757, captures Horace Walpole’s villa at the moment the Gothic Revival was born.

It was kept at his London residence in Berkeley Street and has never hung in the house it was created to record.

The painting is currently on short-term loan and is on display in the Red Bedchamber at Strawberry Hill House, where it can be viewed free with general admission.

We’re told “two generous supporters” have pledged to match donations to the appeal pound-for-pound.
