Mitcham and Morden’s Labour MP is urging the government not to change the freedoms currently awarded to academies.

The School’s Bill will bring them in line with state-maintained schools in several areas.

When Siobhain McDonagh was elected in 1997, two schools in her constituency were in the bottom performing 5% of schools in London.

Ms McDonagh has told the Commons the process of converting failing schools into academies turned them around.
