298 tonnes of waste had to be rejected for recycling in Elmbridge last year.

The council says it was because it had been contaminated by unrecyclable items.

The authority is urging residents to make sure they sort their waste properly to avoid the extra cost being passed on to the taxpayer.

Tips for good recycling include washing cartons before putting them in the correct bin and separating items that can’t be recycled together.
