The council has approved plans submitted by FunBox Entertainment Ltd in November.
The former store on the junction of Clarence Street and Old London Road shut in August 2023 when the high street chain went bust.
It will have activities including bowling, snooker, virtual reality games and darts and will also be able to serve alcohol.
The building will be extended by three storeys to include more than 50 flats.
