We’re told levels of diesel spilled in the River Wandle in Mitcham are unlikely to cause any problems to people’s health.

It’s after a spillage last week leaked around 4,000 litres of the fluid into the “at risk” chalk stream.

Walkers should keep pets out of the water for the time being as a precautionary measure according to Merton Council.

An investigation into what happened is being carried out by a number of authorities including Thames Water and the Environment Agency.
