A two-minute silence was held by the memorial stone in Spencer Park. The service drew crowds including representatives from the National Rail.
The disaster claimed 35 lives back in 1988 when three trains collided with each other due to faulty wiring in approach to the station.
Plans are being put in place for a series of signalling events next Spring, to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.
