That’s despite Conservative Lisa Townsend being re-elected to the role.
The Lib Dem candidate, Paul Kennedy, reduced Ms Townsend’s lead by nearly three-quarters from around 53,000 to 13,325 votes.
The party was also the biggest winner in the county’s local elections gaining an additional 11 councillors.
