The Leader of Merton Council has joined Leaders from six other authorities in writing to the new Health Secretary.

The leaders have contacted Wes Streeting asking him to review the decision to close children’s cancer treatment services.

They are to be moved from St George’s Hospital in Tooting and the Royal Marsden in Sutton to the Evelina Hospital in Waterloo from Autumn 2026.

NHS England made the decision in March following a 12 week pubic consultation.

It said the current arrangement does not meet national requirements as the Marsden does not have a children’s intensive care unit on site.

The other councils involved are Wandsworth, Richmond, Kingston, Sutton, Croydon and Surrey.

The letter to Mr Streeting highlights each authority’s intention to submit referrals to the health department to “call in” the decision.

This process involves re-examining a decision which has not yet been implemented.
