Statement from the RTC.
The Royal Tennis Court, Hampton Court Palace, is honoured to announce that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO has graciously accepted their invitation to become the club’s Royal Patron. This continues a prestigious tradition of Royal Patronage spanning 102 years, dating back to the reign of Edward VII, and aligns with a nearly 500-year history of Royal involvement in Real Tennis, whether as players or spectators. Prince Edward, now The Duke of Edinburgh, played his first game at Hampton Court on March the 31st, 1986, the day after the tragic fire at the Palace.
The Duke of Edinburgh has been a devoted player of Real Tennis and has visited the court on numerous occasions. In November 2018, His Royal Highness completed an extraordinary tour of all 50 playable Real Tennis courts worldwide to raise awareness and support for The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. The tour, originally initiated under the auspices of the late Prince Philip, concluded with a visit to the Royal Tennis Court at Hampton Court Palace, followed by a grand gala dinner in The Great Hall.
The Duke’s connection to the sport dates back to his university days when he played Real Tennis for his own Gold Award. His world tour further underscored his commitment to ensuring that young people across the globe have access to and can participate in this historic sport.
The Duke of Edinburgh remains committed to encouraging young people from all walks of life to engage in sport, whether Real Tennis or otherwise. His Royal Highness also serves as Patron of the Tennis & Rackets Association, the governing body of our sport.
The Royal Tennis Court is deeply honoured by The Duke of Edinburgh’s patronage and looks forward to upholding the rich legacy of Real Tennis under his esteemed support.
