Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on the 27th of January each year to remember the millions murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
To mark the day, a flag was raised outside Spelthorne Borough Council’s offices as part of a special ceremony led by the Mayor, Cllr Med Buck.
The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Med Buck, said: “The Holocaust must never be forgotten. It’s vital to remember the six million Jews murdered under Nazi persecution and other genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. Hatred, racism, and discrimination fuelled these genocides and we must work together to combat these evils. We must treat others as we wish to be treated. I urge everyone to learn about the atrocities in Nazi Germany and subsequent genocides to avoid repeating past mistakes.”
At 8pm, people across the nation will light candles and place them safely in their windows to:
- remember those murdered for who they were
- stand against prejudice and hatred today
Iconic buildings and landmarks will light up in purple during this national moment of commemoration and solidarity.
