Scientists at the University of Surrey have won £200,000 to study some of the rarest and most short-lived atoms in the universe.

They will work with researchers in Japan to learn how elements are made in extreme events like supernovae.

The Surrey team will build and test the special equipment in the UK before experiments start in Japan.

It’s hoped the three-year project will improve our understanding of the universe and strengthen UK-Japan scientific teamwork.
