The All England Club’s plans to build an 8,000-seat stadium there was granted planning permission by the deputy Mayor of London last year.

The club says the development will allow Wimbledon qualifying to take place on site, in line with the other three Grand Slams and also improve facilities for players.

But a petition against the plans organised by Save Wimbledon Park attracted more than 20,000 signatures.

Fears have been raised over flood risk and air quality, plus the loss of wildlife, trees and open spaces.

Merton Council is in favour of the plans and approved them while Wandsworth Council objected.
