The battery had been put in a paper and cardboard recycling bin, but staff spotted the smoke and called firefighters.
No one was hurt, but the council says batteries can cause fires when they are damaged or crushed.
People should take old batteries to special recycling points instead of putting them in their normal rubbish or recycling.
