People in Kingston are waiting to find out if they will continue to pay one of the highest council tax rates in London.

The authority says this year’s budget is currently going through the committee cycle for approval and will conclude on the 27th.

The Lib Dem run borough is proposing increasing its total Band D bill by the maximum it can without a referendum which is 4.99%

The hike includes an extra £18.98 for Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan’s, part of the precept.

Properties in England are put into one of eight bands depending on the price they would have sold for in April 1991.

About half of local authority funding comes from council tax according to the Institute for Government.

A spokesperson for Kingston says;

“The budget for 25/26 is currently going through the committee cycle for approval. This will conclude at the Budget Council on 27 February. If approved, we will then be able to confirm Kingston’s Council Tax for the year.”

At the other end of the scale, Labour run Wandsworth has announced it is freezing your Council Tax for the third year in a row. That means residents will continue to pay the lowest Council Tax in the country.
