More than 28,000 butterflies and day-flying moths were spotted in Surrey this summer, during Butterfly Conservation’s annual count.

Around 2,500 people took part across the county, with Gatekeepers the most commonly seen butterfly.

But experts warn the hot, dry weather could lead to a fall in numbers next year, as plants needed by caterpillars have withered.

They’re urging people to plant trees, collect rainwater and leave grass uncut to help butterflies through future droughts.
