Middlesex Day is being celebrated across parts of South West London and Surrey.

The annual event celebrates the history of Middlesex County, which originally incorporated central London and stretched out to Staines.

Middlesex was originally known as ‘Middle Saxon’ and was first recorded in the year 704 in a Saxon Charter.

The distinctive former county flag is flying outside Spelthorne’s council offices today.
