The bright yellow “Bridge Buttress” ropes are tied to the part of the bridge that meets the water.
This means anyone who accidentally falls into the water can hopefully cling on to one while they wait for help.
The council says it took the decision, with help from the RNLI, following a number of deaths in the Thames over the last few years.
