Prison officials say the high-profile critic of Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, has died.

The UK, US and Ukraine are among those blaming the Kremlin though Nato says, while we must establish the facts, Russia has ‘serious questions to answer.’

He’s being remembered by British politicians of all parties for his ‘bravery, courage’ and as a fierce advocate for democracy.

The 47-year-old survived a poisoning in 2020, and was imprisoned in 2021.

A Kremlin spokesperson says a cause of death is for the ‘medics’ to figure out.

The Lib Dems want to see more sanctions now.

Party leader and Kingston MP, Sir Ed Davey has issued a statement on X.

It reads: “Horrified by reports of the death of Alexei Navalny – at the hands of Putin, no doubt.

Putin’s despicable methods might be to kill his enemies, but he will never kill the light of freedom and democracy which Navalny has stood for so courageously.”
