Dame Peggy Ashcroft has been honoured with a blue plaque at her birthplace and childhood home in Croydon.

The actress, who died in 1991 aged 83, became the oldest person to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role when she was 77.

Her family said, “It is a wonderful tribute to both her amazing theatrical career and to her generosity and humanity.”

And her close friend Dame Judi Dench described Ashcroft as a “wonderful person and actress”.
