Croydon is to become the home of London’s first permanent facial recognition cameras.

The devices scan faces and check them against a database of known criminals so officers can act in real-time and faster.

They’ll be fixed to lampposts or buildings and will only operate when officers are available to monitor them.

Police say anyone who does not match the database will be deleted, following privacy concerns.
