Cross-party senior MPs are calling for an abortion law which has stood in England since the 19th century to be overhauled, after a mother-of-three was jailed

Carla Foster, who’s 44, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court to 28 months – 14 of which in prison – for using pills during lockdown to terminate a pregnancy after the legal 24 weeks.

The conviction used legislation which was introduced in 1861.

Mitcham Labour MP Siobhan McDonagh says “Who is being helped by this poor woman being sent to prison?”.
