The 23 year old from Sutton won the first set on a tie break before his opponent Matteo Berrettini retired from the match because of injury.
There were defeats for Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley in the Spanish capital.
Norrie was beaten in a deciding third set by Canada’s Gabriel Diallo, while Fearnley lost in straight sets to Grigor Dimitrov.
