BBC Radio 1’s first female DJ has died at the age of 83 after a short illness.

Annie Nightingale started presenting in 1970 and became its longest-serving broadcaster.

Her family says she was passionate about encouraging women to become DJs and broadcasters.

She attended St Catherine’s School in Twickenham and Lady Eleanor Holles in Hampton before heading to the University of Westminster.

Annie was awarded an MBE in 2002 and a CBE in 2020.
