The charity’s latest survey of 50 councils has found almost nine in ten stray dogs have been unable to be reunited with their owners this year.
This is because the details of their microchip were missing, inaccurate or unavailable at the time.
This means dogs can spend longer in kennels while their owners are traced.
Battersea is calling on the Government to urgently implement the reforms to the microchipping system announced in 2024.
