An animal rights activist who ran on to the track at the Epsom Derby has avoided a jail sentence.

The Jockey Club had been granted an injunction banning the Animal Rising group from intervening at last June’s event.

But Ben Newman admitted breaching the order during contempt of court proceedings at the High Court.

He was handed an 18 week jail term, suspended for two years, and fined £1,356.
