The officer was responding to a report of a man being drunk and disorderly outside Sainsbury’s on New Zealand Avenue.
They called for more assistance after the man in his 30s became violent and assaulted him.
Police are asking any witnesses that they haven’t spoken to yet to contact them on 101.
